Federal Office for Information Security (Germany)
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), established on January 1, 1991, is Germany’s inational cyber security authority and the central architect of secure digitalization for the state, economy, and society. Reporting to the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, the BSI is tasked with protecting the federal government’s information systems and critical national infrastructure by developing security standards, certifying IT products, and coordinating the defense against cyberattacks through the National Cyber Defence Centre. The agency plays a pivotal role in strengthening Germany’s digital resilience by providing technical expertise, managing the IT-Grundschutz methodology, and issuing binding security requirements for federal authorities. The BSI also focuses on digital consumer protection and the security of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and 5G, to ensure the trustworthiness of the digital ecosystem.
