EU Regulation 2024/1183 eIDAS v2 on Electronic Identification

This document focuses on:

Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 of the European Parliament and of the Council, adopted on 11 April 2024, amends Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 to establish the European Digital Identity Framework. Its core objective is to enable EU citizens, residents, and businesses to securely participate in the digital society with a trusted and standardized digital identification system across the Union. The Regulation mandates all Member States to provide European Digital Identity Wallets (EDIW) by the end of 2026, which are secure electronic identification tools allowing individuals to store, manage, and share identity data and electronic attestations for both public and private services across borders. The wallets grant users full control over their personal data, enable electronic signatures with legal validity, and must comply with rigorous standards for security and transparency, including open-source application software components. This framework aims to ensure seamless, trusted access to digital services, fostering an integrated internal digital market and supporting trust services in electronic transactions across the EU.

Key dates:
Sept 2026: applicability for trusted service providers
Nov 2027: EUDI wallets accepted by EU services and businesses
